Esta antigua ruta comercial estaba vinculada a la red de <strong>Rutas de la Seda<\/strong> y se conoce como <strong>el camino hist\u00f3rico a Katmand\u00fa<\/strong>. En t\u00e9rminos occidentales, puede parecer que estamos hablando de un pasado muy lejano, pero en Nepal las infraestructuras modernas son muy recientes: la <strong>carretera<\/strong> India-Katmand\u00fa (una carretera polvorienta, estrecha y ventosa) se complet\u00f3 en <strong>1956<\/strong> y el <strong>aeropuerto<\/strong> en <strong>1957<\/strong>, aunque los aviones regulares no comenzaron a operar hasta 1972.<br \/>\nPor lo tanto, Bhimphedi siempre hab\u00eda disfrutado de una posici\u00f3n estrat\u00e9gica: salvaguardaba el \u00fanico puerto en la cordillera de Mahabharat que abr\u00eda la llave al valle de Katmand\u00fa, que fue celosamente protegido en el pasado.<\/p>\n<p>Siendo un punto de cruce ineludible, Bhimphedi se convirti\u00f3 en un centro comercial muy importante y tambi\u00e9n en un buen lugar para quedarse y descansar durante unos d\u00edas, ya que fue el primer pueblo fresco despu\u00e9s de la c\u00e1lida jungla de Chitwan, que en esos d\u00edas estaba infestada de malaria. Por lo tanto, se construyeron muchos <strong>edificios oficiales<\/strong> y <strong>hostales<\/strong> en el pueblo, en muchos estilos arquitect\u00f3nicos diferentes. El pueblo tambi\u00e9n era un centro de transporte donde los viajeros ten\u00edan que cambiar su sistema de transporte de elefantes, cartas o camiones a palanquines, caballos o simplemente caminar. Es por eso que Bhimphedi tiene un <strong>establo de elefantes<\/strong> (Hattisar), que a\u00fan alberga m\u00e1s de 50 sillas de montar hist\u00f3ricas para elefantes (tambi\u00e9n conocidas como haudas). Debido a estos hechos, Bhimphedi tiene una rica herencia de hermosa arquitectura Rana, Newar y Rural.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Transporte impactante<\/strong><br \/>\nEste camino fue todo menos f\u00e1cil; descripciones similares se pueden leer en diferentes relatos de viajeros, como el siguiente de 1937:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cAl salir de Bhimphedi, uno se enfrenta a un ascenso de m\u00e1s de 2000 pies, y aunque se ha mejorado hasta quedar irreconocible en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, el camino, como sol\u00eda ser, debe haber sido el peor acceso a cualquier capital civilizada en el mundo. Era, en realidad, poco m\u00e1s que el lecho de un torrente, sembrado de cantos rodados y con una pendiente que oscilaba entre los veinticinco y los treinta y cinco grados\u201d.<\/em><br \/>\nLa pista fue definitivamente dura, pero los <strong>viajeros<\/strong> se llevaron la mejor parte. Lo peor era para los <strong>porteadores<\/strong>, que ten\u00edan que llevar al hombro todo tipo de mercanc\u00edas inimaginables: desde personas hasta palanquines; desde estatuas de bronce hasta enormes tuber\u00edas para presas; y desde pianos de cola hasta autom\u00f3viles\u2026 \u00a1y la gasolina para hacerlos funcionar!<\/p>\n<p>Hasta la d\u00e9cada de 1960, todo bien que entraba en Nepal ten\u00eda que ser transportado a hombros a trav\u00e9s de las empinadas laderas de Mahabarat. Bhimphedi ocupa una posici\u00f3n clave en la preservaci\u00f3n de la memoria hist\u00f3rica de estos antiguos tipos de transporte tradicional. A diferencia del resto del mundo, donde las cargas siempre las llevaban animales, en Nepal siempre las han llevado personas, y esto es un dato muy curioso de este pa\u00eds.
