Household air pollution (HAP) causes noncommunicable diseases including stroke, ischaemic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and lung cancer. These lung diseases may increase the transmission and severity of viral infections as coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>While the earthquake killed 9,000 people in 2015, toxic fumes from kitchens prematurely kill <strong>24,000 people each year<\/strong>. Especially women and children (WHO 2019). That is why Awasuka has focused its priority on the installation of <strong>kitchens with chimneys<\/strong>, as an optimal solution to <strong>eradicate smoke from kitchens<\/strong>. <br class=\"avia-permanent-lb\" \/><br class=\"avia-permanent-lb\" \/><\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"AWASUKA - El Cam\u00ed de la Solidaritat - Smokeless Kitchens 2020\" width=\"1500\" height=\"844\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HyWfZKXJD0E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><br class=\"avia-permanent-lb\" \/>During 2019, Awasuka and Practical Action collaborated in the installation of 333 chimneys in Makawanpur District. In 2020, Awasuka is collaborating with El Cam\u00ed de la Solidaritat to install 500 more chimneys and to be able to scale the project to more areas of Nepal. Smoke eradication in kitchens contributes to three UN SDGs<br \/>\n(Sustainable Development Goals): <br class=\"avia-permanent-lb\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5256\" src=\"https:\/\/awasuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Sdg-03-05-13_2-2-80x80.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"761\" srcset=\"https:\/\/awasuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Sdg-03-05-13_2-2-91x300.jpg 91w, https:\/\/awasuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Sdg-03-05-13_2-2-311x1030.jpg 311w, https:\/\/awasuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Sdg-03-05-13_2-2-213x705.jpg 213w, https:\/\/awasuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Sdg-03-05-13_2-2.jpg 408w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>SDG 3 &#8211; Good Health and Well-Being.<\/strong> Exposure to HAP is a leading risk factor for diseases such as: childhood pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder, ischemic heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer. It is also related to increased risk for stillbirth, low birthweight and decreased lung function in newborns.<\/li>\n<li><strong>SDG 5 &#8211; Gender Equality.<\/strong> A reduction in time spent collecting firewood and cooking enables women to spend more time with their children and to enhance their economic or educational opportunities.<\/li>\n<li><strong>SDG 13 \u2013 Climate Action.<\/strong> Short-lived climate pollutants such as black carbon and methane (CH4), as well as other greenhouse gases such as carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2), are emitted due to the incomplete combustion of kerosene and solid fuels, which occurs while cooking on open fires or with inefficient stoves. Improved cooking stoves can reduce fuel use by 40-60%, resulting in fewer greenhouse gas and black carbon emissions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The total price of a kitchen with chimney (including materials, manufacture and installation) is 100 Euros. They were later tested and refined in the field and finally Awasuka introduced some additional improvements. Each <strong>smokeless kitchen<\/strong> includes:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5228\" src=\"https:\/\/awasuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/EsquemaXemeneia2-80x80.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/awasuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/EsquemaXemeneia2-179x300.jpg 179w, https:\/\/awasuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/EsquemaXemeneia2-614x1030.jpg 614w, https:\/\/awasuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/EsquemaXemeneia2-420x705.jpg 420w, https:\/\/awasuka.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/EsquemaXemeneia2.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Chimney<\/strong> (metal) which comes out through the roof and, thanks to its design, prevents water from entering from the outside.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hood<\/strong> (metal), which conducts the smoke by convection to the vertical duct; <br class=\"avia-permanent-lb\" \/><br class=\"avia-permanent-lb\" \/><\/li>\n<li><strong>Improved cooking-stove<\/strong> (stone and mud), with 1,2 or 3 hotplates and a design that improves combustion, contributing to 40% firewood saving; <br class=\"avia-permanent-lb\" \/><br class=\"avia-permanent-lb\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><br class=\"avia-permanent-lb\" \/>The operation of this set is highly optimized: <strong>more than 90%<\/strong> of the indoor smoke is expelled to the outside, creating a clean and healthy environment inside, where mothers and children can cook without suffering the effects of the smoke in their health. The reasons for choosing this type of cuisine for <strong>remote rural areas<\/strong> are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Acceptance of 100% of the beneficiaries<\/strong>. That is why <strong>firewood is the only biomass alternative<\/strong> in these areas.
